Treatment Plant Mechanic

General Statement of Duties

Under direction of the Plant Supervisor, manage the maintenance of the treatment plant, solids processing facilities and collection system. Confer with Plant Foreman and Plant Supervisor on critical process operations and maintenance priorities.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Establish procedures and schedules for maintenance of facilities and equipment. Propose replacements, repairs and facility modifications, estimate costs and present recommendations as necessary. Evaluate results and costs of preventive and corrective maintenance work; e.g., future purchasing recommendations. Develop and present reports on maintenance facilities and equipment; e.g., weekly work briefings. Develop and maintain a spare parts inventory system for all equipment.

Located at 224 Roosevelt Avenue in Oakhurst, TOSA operates a 7.5 million gallons per day (MGD) pure oxygen activated sludge wastewater treatment facility. The Authority manages approximately 145 miles of sanitary sewer lines and 12 pump stations. In addition to Ocean Township, TOSA provides wastewater treatment services to the Boroughs of Allenhurst, Deal, Interlaken, and Loch Arbour.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and smell. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee is often required to perform heavy manual labor for extensive periods.

The employee must regularly open and close doors up to 50 pounds, bend over and pull open and shut slide gates three to six feet down, sweep and mop floors. On occasion the employee must pull 25 foot to 50 foot sections of 1 1/2 inch fire hose, open manholes weighing up to 100 pounds; pull and move totes up to 3,500 pounds with the use of a floor jack; unload and move deliveries of 55 gallon drums and boxes up to 60 pounds; shovel sand; open and close valves up to 30 turns per valve.
